Mother Nature is the women-led HipHop force of Klevah and TRUTH—emcee-educators devoted to building a legacy founded on self-discovery and community empowerment. Best described as “fresh nostalgia,” the Chicago and Houston-based duo is the answer for those seeking both substance and simplicity. Mother Nature has independently toured nationally and internationally, and supported acts such as Rico Nasty, Princess Nokia, Doja Cat, Ty Dolla $ign, The Free Nationals + more. Their mixtape “SZNZ” landed on a handful of ‘Best Album’ lists including Bandcamp and Complex.
Prior to forming Mother Nature as a musical group, TRUTH and Klevah originally connected as students and activists at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. While attending the university, Klevah and TRUTH became united in sisterhood through their sociological education of Black Feminism and Black Girlhood, led by Gender and Women’s Studies professor Dr. Ruth Nicole Brown. They coupled their formal education with their passion for music by joining the organization W.O.R.D. (Writers Organizing Realistic Dialect), which guided them to perfect their craft of writing, poetry and lyricism. Klevah graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Writing with a minor in Sociology and TRUTH with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Administration and Education.
Heavily embedded in the community at the university, Klevah and TRUTH used their ingenuity learned through the culture of HipHop to conduct protest cyphers, youth festivals, and other teenage events to hold space for voices that were consistently being ignored.
During this activism work, Mother Nature developed their initial workshop series, The Miseducation of HipHop. The Miseducation of HipHop, also known as MISED, is a music-based curriculum and wellness practice for all ages focused on self-acceptance, healing traumas, and dream building. The series is established under Mother Nature, Inc. – a 501(c)(3) organization that focuses on community, culture, performance, and entrepreneurship, and strives to address and improve mental health issues using the language of HipHop. Recognized by GRAMMY Awards, Mother Nature reflects a HipHop aesthetic coupled with a real-world insight that intersects self-knowledge and traditional education, allowing them to connect and engage students in a unique way as mentors.
